Town Trail

Bury’s history stretches back
for over 1,000 years.

The aim of this visit is to study the growth and development of Bury over the last 1000 years. Pupils will use maps and old photographs to “spot the differences”, research the range of industries and take a walk to explore part of the town centre.

Suitable for Key Stage 2, year 7 and year 8.

Activities

Taking place at the Bury Transport Museum and in the surrounding area, Town Trail includes a whole host of interactive sessions to bring historic Bury to life for enquiring young minds, including:

  • 60 minute sessions exploring local maps from 1847 and 1908, and comparing old and new photographs of the town centre
  • 60 minute guided walk around Bury town centre with regular stops to compare the Bury of old with the Bury of today
  • A 35 minute map hunt, where pupils will find the telltale evidence of industries that could be found around Bury throughout history
  • A 15 minute question and answer session where pupils can pose their questions to experts in local history
